Hand carved throne for Saint John Paul II

In the mid nineties Agrell Architectural Carving were honoured to be awarded the commission to construct and carve the throne for Saint John Paul II visit to the USA.

Architect David Tryba sent us a sketch of the vision he had which would be simple but reflect the famous Rocky Mountains that dominate Denver and the State.

Master Carver, Ian Agrell and Scott Richter with the throne constructed and carved for Saint John Paul II visit to Denver.

Together we worked on the simple decoration and decided to use the state flower - the columbine - as our inspiration. You will see the design carved into the head of the throne and woven into the fabric by the good ladies of Utah with whom we had worked with on the construction and carving of the screen and tabernacle for The Cathedral of the Madeleine in Salt Lake City.
