Why Hand Woodcarving?

VIDEO: Master Carver, Ian Agrell, discusses the philosophy behind Agrell Architectural Carving.

Only skilful hand carving can seamlessly integrate the subtlety of design, artistic sensitivity and technique, which will result in the creation of a completely unique environment.

The hands of an experienced carver can enrich the construction by employing a technique that can only be acquired through years of practice and experience, coupled with an absolute understanding of the medium of wood. A skilled carver is able to articulate clean, crisp lines and possesses the artistic sensitivity necessary to understand the structure, flow and movement inherent in hand carved ornamentation.

Most importantly, an accomplished carver views the design not only with artistic sensitivity but also in relation to scale, proportion, and historical accuracy.

Using paper and pencil, carvers who have been in the trade for up to fifty years meticulously prepare our designs. Our artisans are not trapped by the restrictions of a computer program or the limitations of a machine.  We offer you the unique opportunities available when carving by hand.
